City Wonders offers tours focused on a selection of Europe’s premier cities with major circuits like Rome, the Vatican, Florence, Venice, London and Paris, as well as many other popular destinations and venues. Since 2004, more than 2 million people have chosen them as their trusted guide and travel companion to the places they visit on 100 thousand plus tours. 1 million people have enjoyed travel experiences with them in the last two years alone. Delivering a stand out, unique customer experience is at the centre of everything that drives the City Wonders business. Currently, 86% of customers of City Wonder’s rate their experience on Tripadvisor as “Excellent”. Their unique approach started as just one tour, and was so successful that the company grew to encompass the more than the 120 tours and 20 destinations they offer today. All of their tours are bookable directly on their website, or through a network of over 50 major travel distributors worldwide.

The Assignment

The company made the decision to base their architecture and engineering function in Dublin. In order to make this approach successful, they came to Accreate to assist them in identification and securing of an outstanding technology leader. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) was to be the thought-leader and innovator driving the strategic technical goals of the business, communicating the vision from a technical perspective and providing outstanding leadership and direction in the execution of the role. City Wonders Ltd, while offering a travel service, is essentially a technology company.

Our Solution

Accreate were looking for an individual that could take a holistic view of the business from an “as is” and “will be” perspective and develop a technology road map that would meet and accelerate the company’s growth trajectory. This person needed to have a technical breadth but more importantly, the ability to get stuck in and roll their sleeves up in a fast paced, scale up environment.

We cast our net wide and longlisted over 250 candidates. The successful candidate had a fantastic track record in growing and scaling technology driven business. Most importantly, from a cultural perspective he matched the passion and vision of the CEO – founder and could translate that direction to the building of best in class technology through people.
